See what categories Facebook assigned you to

Did you know Facebook is so intelligent that it automatically assigns you to different categories, based on your behaviour online?
For example, it assigned me to these lists of people: "Away from family, “Away from home town”, “Close friend of expats” and many more. All of them absolutely right! I was born in Moldova, my family lives in Czech Republic, I live in Italy and have lots of expat friends.

On the other hand, I was surprised to find Interior Design as one of my interests. Probably I liked some pictures featuring places with cool design, but it’s not at all a real interest of mine.
What is this categorisation and interests identification for? Advertisers, of course!

Facebook helps advertisers reach people that are most likely to be interested in the services and products they are promoting, offering the possibility to create ads for a public built on certain details.
For example, a baby shoe shop could promote their products to women of a certain age, interested in pages related to babies.

I know what you’re thinking right now.
What categories was I assigned to by Facebook? And what about my interests?

Let me show you where you can check this!

Follow my steps:
  1. Access your Facebook account.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Click on Ads in the left menu.
  4. Your ad preferences
  5. You’ll find Your Interests defined, based on pages you liked, but also based on other type of interaction with different topics.
  6. Below Advertisers you interacted with, you’ll find: Your information
  7. Click on Your categories to see the list of categories you were added to. You can remove categories you think you don’t belong to.
  8. Optional: if you want, you can change your Ad Settings or Hide ad topics

If you reached this point of the post, let me tell you something more. If you want to know why you are seeing a certain ad, you can find the reason clicking on the three dots in the corner of the Facebook ad.

Example: I saw an ad promoting a gym, clicked on Why I see this ad, and found out they want to reach people aged 20 to 50, near their business.

Why I'm seeing this ad, Facebook, gym ad.

Now, tell me, curious reader, what do you think about this?
Did Facebook assign you to the right categories? Did it identify your real interests?

Are you scared of the power of artificial intelligence?

  1. This is really interesting. I will have to try it out. I live in my hometown, close to family, but I lived away for a while so I have friends all over. It will be interesting to see.

  2. I found this out about a year ago just by looking around in my settings and it totally creeped me out! I turned everything off, deleted all the info about where I'm from and where I lived.... I even deleted facebook for a while. But I'm back, just more careful now. You didn't say how you feel about it? Did you turn off those settings?

    1. It scares me a bit but on the other hand I think it's cool that we can see ads related to the topic we're interested in. Mine are turned on. The only thing that scares me is that big businesses can have even our names, after we interact online in some way with them.

  3. I would love to see which categories I fall under on Facebook!!!

  4. Well, I will try this for sure! So cooooooool article!

  5. I’ve always found Facebook to be kind of creepy with the things it knows lol! I didn’t realize it assigned us categories, nor did I know that we could edit them. I’ve always wondered how it comes with the ads it shows us. Intuitive and neat, but still a little creepy! lol!

  6. Very cool article and it certainly explains a lot about why Facebook seems to be listening!

  7. wow i never knew that. artificial intelligence is really working behind the scenes

  8. this was pretty cool how you figured out how to find these things. i know they are always watching which is scary but cool at the same time because i dont need ads that mean nothing to me

  9. I've always been fascinated by the types of information we leave behind while on a website. Facebook has been showing me some strange ads though.

  10. I wonder what interests Facebook will categorize me in! I also wonder how accurate it will be - cooking and food should definitely be in there.

  11. This is definitely scary in a way but very smart on part of Facebook. I guess this is the reason why they keep the service free since they make a lot of money with advertisers

  12. This is really cool but also a bit creepy at the same time. It’s weird to think they’re keeping tabs in a way.

  13. Facebook is really something else. They nailed my group.

  14. Wow! This is a bit creepy...I'll have to change my setting now. I didn't know this, thanks for sharing.
